A Tribute to Gabby Gabby Pahinui & Various Artists CDHS-648
EA$12.95

John Berger of The Honolulu Star-Bulletin says: "This isn't the first tribute album to honor...the popularity of an iconic artist, but it sets a new standard for any and all that come after.

Gabby "Pops" Pahinui was not a prolific composer, but he was the most influential Hawaiian slack-key guitarist of the 20th century. therefore, rather than have a bunch of hot young artists redo Pahinui's music in their style, producer 'Flip' McDiarmid has collected 10 recordings by artists who were influenced by Pahinui's music and have sought to perpetuate it George Kuo, Dwight Kanae, Albert Kaai and Anita Pahinui Nakamura, to name four.

There's also a recording of "Moana Chimes" by Raymond Kane...[and]...a beautiful 1961 vintage recording of Pahinui playing 'Nani Wale Lihu‘e,' 'Silver Threads Among The Gold' and 'Wai‘alae.' "

McDiarmid includes all the documentation to make this album a perfect introduction to pahinui's life. It includes an overview of Pahinui's life, short bios of the other artists and the slack-key tunings used on each song." (1/4/08)

Aunty May’s Hula FavoritesAunty May CDHS-641
EA$12.95

In a cheery green house up the street from me is Aunty May’s house. Her full name is May Kalehua Kamai. and I first met her about 25 years ago when she was playing ‘ukulele and singing with the Pua Melia Trio. She had a beautiful voice then and still has it! I never knew that one day she would end up playing music with me and for several years she played rhythm guitar with Joe Keaulana on bass. We did some interisland traveling together as a trio but Aunty May has seen so much more of the world as a musical ambassador for Hawaiian Airlines and the famed Kodak Hula Show. She’s charmed literally millions of people with her lilting soprano in England, Holland, Canada, Korea, Japan, the isles of Polynesia, and most recently, in France. She can also sing as low as a tenor and, if she must, she’s not too bad on the upright bass, either. Like most of us Hawaiians, she’s a self-taught singer and musician. Aunty May’s specialty is hula music and that’s why she has performed for so many award-winning hula groups and well-known celebrities too... The last time I was in Aunty May’s house, she was completing a kapa kuiki (Hawaiian quilt) for someone dear to her. She loves people and Hawaiian music and I know that you’ll love listening to Aunty May’s hula favorites, as countless others have.” – Kimo Alama Keaulana, educator, award-winning singer-musician and the kumu hula’s kumu hula.

The vocal ensemble Manoa Voices are the winners of the 2007 Ka Himeni Ana acoustic traditional Hawaiian vocal competition.  Its members are all University of Hawai‘i - Manoa student/musician/singers. Led by their teacher, Chadwick Pang, Mamina Koga, Rosanna Perch, Sophronia Smith and Justin Ka‘upu explore Hawaiian and Oceanic music. Former Royal Hawaiian Bandmaster, Aaron Mahi, says "The music of Manoa Voices reaches back to when the simplicity of the accompaniment was served in gentle portions, allowing the voices the liberty to delight and allure the listener on this aural voyage..."  If you're looking for a group that "captures the energy of Hawai‘i's youthful present by simultaneously bearing both mind and heart from its past – when Hawai‘i stood at the threshold of swing and rich harmonies – then look no further.  Eia ka mea waiwai no ‘ia (The value is here, right here)."
