Aloha Fest Falsetto Winners, Vol. IVVarious Artists CDHS-629
EA$12.95

Hawaiian falsetto singing (leo ki`eki`e) is one of Hawai‘i's greatest contributions to musical culture. As part of the Aloha Festivals celebration, two friendly and tremendously enjoyable falsetto competitions occur annually: Hawai`i Island's "Kindy" Sproat Falsetto and Storytelling Contest and O‘ahu's Frank B. Shaner Falsetto Contest. The winners of each event earn a Hula Records recording contract. The contests and recordings are integral in keeping the art of falsetto alive.

2002 winners, Hilo-born and raised "Kaniala" Masoe and Hawai‘i transplant Gary Medeiros, who now calls California home, sing four falsetto favorites each. Popular past falsetto contest winners "Chan" Abenes and Stan Priddy – also heard on other volumes of this Hoku Award-winning series – round out the album with two songs a piece.

" Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest Winners, Vol. IV" is a perfect CD for falsetto enthusiasts and hula dancers alike.

Evening In The IslandsMaile Serenaders CDHS-509
EA$12.95

"Evening In The Islands" features the twin steel guitars of two of Hawai‘i's noted musicians: Barney Isaacs and Eddie "Kalani" Pang. Hawaiian music legends Gabby Pahinui (slack-key guitar) and Eddie Kamae (‘ukulele) team up with Kaipo Miller (bass) and Sol Kamahele (guitar), and together with the two wizards of steel, comprise The Maile Serenaders. The lilting voice of Nina Keali‘iwahamana is heard as she delivers an occasional line from each song.

Here are instrumental versions of some of Hawai‘i's most popular songs of all time, with an unusual twist: This is the only instrumental recording of Hawaiian music featuring two steel guitars playing in tandem. The result is both romantic and relaxing; a perfect background for a candle-lit dinner with someone special, for sitting alone an enjoying a beautiful Hawaiian sunset; or for dreaming of your return to these islands.

Halau Hula OlanaHalau Hula Olana CDHS-610
EA$12.95

Founded in 1975 by Howard and Olana Ai, HALAU HULA OLANA, the School of Living Hula, has grown to become one of the largest hula schools in the islands. Hundreds of Hawai‘i's keiki (children) have passed through the halau doors and gone on to charm local audiences and visitors at a multitude of venues on land and aboard cruise ships. Many of them have taken part in annual hula competitions, performed for four American presidents and for dignitaries and audiences overseas. Repeatedly, the halau has been recognized for its excellence.

The voices of kuma hula Olana Ai and her students are heard at the beginning and end of the CD.  In between, you'll hear Olana's talented family: husband Howard, who arranges the songs, sings and plays ukulele; eldest daughter, Natalie Ai, a Hoku Award-winning singer, delivers powerful vocals, sons Tai and Rhett take turns on the bass; and Natalie's husband ‘Iolani Kamau‘u sings and plays guitar. Together they create the unique Ai family sound as they perform halau favorites.  Hapa-Haole HulasKahauanu Lake Trio CDHS-515
EA$12.95

During the '30s and '40s, as more and more mainlanders were lured to Hawai‘i's shores, the songwriters among them strove to capture the beauty and spirit of the Islands in song. Mainly written in English, with an occasional Hawaiian word or two, these hapa-haole (part foreign) compositions gained popularity with the malihini (visitors).

The Kahauanu Lake Trio was THE group to see in Waikiki from the mid '50s until well into the '80's. Though firmly rooted in Hawaiian tradition, the trio was often asked to perform these hapa-haole favorites by visitors in their audiences. What was a hit with visitors then, is still preferred by many. After all, the music is lovely, the instrumentation distinctly Hawaiian, and the primarily English lyrics understood by most. The acclaimed trio performs some of the most well-known hapa-haole tunes for your enjoyment.

Information concerning each song is included.

 Hawai'i TodayLoyal Garner CDHS-558
EA$12.95

Loyal Garner was called ‘The Lady of Love’ for good reason – her music embodied goodness, her performance radiated with heartfelt emotion, her voice projected the aloha from the heart. She may be gone, but her legacy is the vast riches of song that continues to tick like a heartbeat within us all.” – Wayne Harada, The Honolulu Advertiser

Loyal’s fans have requested that we re-issue “Hawai‘i Today” in CD format and we are happy to comply. Although she left us all too soon, at the age of 55, we have her music to remind us of her stellar career, her moving stories told through song, the contemporary flair she brought to Hawaiian favorites, and her exceptional showmanship – her smile, that voice, fingers “tickling the ivories,” the banter, and most of all, the love she shared with her audiences.

Lyrics and translations are included for the four Hawaiian language songs.

 Hawaiian Love SongsPalani Vaughan CDHS-535
EA$12.95

Palani Vaughan has been known for so many years as a pioneer of modern Hawaiian nationalistic music, and most of all for the four "Ia ‘Oe E Ka La" albums he recorded in honor of King Kalakaua in the 1970s and early 1980s, that the music on this album will come as a surprise to anyone who knows him for only "Ia ‘Oe E Ka La."

Palani’s debut album, "Meet Palani Vaughan and The Sunday Manoa" [Hula Records, 1967], showed his strength as a contemporary Hawaiian artist, this one reinvented him as a potential successor to the late Alfred Apaka as a peerless romantic crooner of Hawaiian and hapa-haole classics set to sophisticated orchestral arrangements. Hawai‘i has changed tremendously since these recordings were made in 1970, but beautiful music is timeless,

and this album is a perfect antidote to the stress of living in modern, congested, over-built and over-developed Hawai‘i nei.

Lyrics and translations for Hawaiian language songs are enclosed.

 Jazz Hawaiian StyleKeahi Conjugacion CDHRI-1021

Hawaiian music and jazz were made for each other, but it takes an artist with deep roots in both styles to make the marriage work. Keahi Conjugacion brings the soul of a daughter of Hawai‘i and the fire of a jazz diva to this celebration of all that is lyrical and swinging in the music of the Islands.  With inspired accompaniment from keyboard wizard Dan Del Negro, and local jazz greats Gabe Baltazar, Sam Ahia, Buddy Fo, and David Choy, Keahi finds the jazz heart of her own originals and Hawaiian music classics alike.  Keahi's brothers, Tony C and Brother Noland, are already stars of the Hawaiian music scene; with this CD, Keahi takes her rightful place at their side. - Chris Vandercook, local jazzman.
